I built a lamp to help me be more mindful about how I use my phone. Sometimes, I catch myself reflexively grabbing my phone without thinking. Distractions are fine and sometimes useful, but I want to choose when and how and what I’m doing to distract myself. Mindlessly reaching for my phone to get a dopamine hit is not what I want. Can I design something to retrain myself?

The lamp only turns on when your phone rests on its base. Removing the phone leaves you in the dark.

The lamp shade layers can be adjusted by hand to change how much light comes out.

The lamp shade design is based on theta waves, the frequency of waves your brain releases while in deep thought.
